It was during my time in Scotland when alarming research around coral reef bleaching began flooding to the surface. Chemical sunscreens, when released in the water off the swimmer’s skin, the UV filters (like Oxybenzone) in them interact with the marine ecosystem through the water or sediments. This exposes adult corals to chemical pollution, leading to bleaching, viral infection, & death acceleration.

Who would have thought?

Because the problematic sunscreen market in India is selling myths & hiding its dangers from the young & the old, it scares me because it wouldn’t even occur to most that they got early wrinkles in their 40's or developed something as serious as skin cancer all because they used misleading sunscreens in their 20's. Sigh!
